Deliveroo is providing free meals to young people in homeless hostels to give them a happier Christmas.

The online food delivery company is taking free restaurant meals over the Christmas period to 500 people living in accommodation provided by youth homeless charity Centrepoint.

The donation of more than £10,000 of food to hostels across London is part of Deliveroo’s support of our Christmas charity appeal.

The company also hopes to raise more than £40,000 through fundraising including donating 20p to Centrepoint’s homeless helpline from every order in the capital made between Monday, December 19, and Friday, December 23.

Will Shu, co-founder of Deliveroo, who delivered the first meals yesterday, said: “Homelessness affects people right across London - the city where Deliveroo was founded, a city we love and whose people, businesses and communities we care about hugely.

“We’re delighted to be supporting Centrepoint in raising money for their vital homeless helpline this Christmas.

Christmas campaign: Deliveroo will also be donating to the homeless helpline appeal

“We’ll be showing our support by doing what we do best: delivering great restaurant food to all Centrepoint London hostels, and donating 20p of every order in London to back the Evening Standard’s brilliant appeal.”

More than 150,000 young people facing homelessness seek housing support each year, but up to a third are turned away with no help.

The Standard’s Young and Homeless Helpline appeal is raising money to help Centrepoint launch the first national Freephone service for people aged between 16 and 25 facing homelessness or already sleeping rough.

Callers will be able to get advice and support about housing and be linked to services to help them with other issues linked to their homelessness, including mental health, addiction and family breakdown.

Deliveroo wanted to help fund the helpline but also to make a gesture to people in Centrepoint hostel accommodation by offering a meal delivered by and paid for by the company.

Young people can choose from the full range of restaurants available from Deliveroo in their area and their order will be delivered minutes later.

Ben Wardlaw, 22, one of the people helped by Centrepoint who will receive a free meal, said: “Christmas is a funny time of year for homeless young people.

“Of course you miss your family and friends, but you realise it’s the festive things like the food and decorations that make Christmas feel like Christmas.”

The Evening Standard's Homeless Helpline appeal is raising money for the Centrepoint Helpline, a brand new support service that will save young people from ending up on the streets.
