Hippie-style hangouts for over 50s

A sophisticated hippie in the 1970s? Chances are you've become a Middle-Aged Boho (MAB). Now that Paris has reinvented the kaftan, your original won't frighten the children. Here's where to flaunt it.

Goa's original hippie scene at Anjuna (awfully tacky) is avoided by MABs, who head for the hills in a cloud of patchouli to Nilaya Hermitage - Rajasthani palace meets country-house retreat with silk floor cushions, ayurvedic massage and yoga at sunrise: £1,700 half-board. MOROCCO finds MABs sipping rosé at Dar Mimosa, Essaouira, a dusty seaside hangout, once favoured by Hendrix. LAMU, a soporific island off the Kenyan coast, is a haven for MABs, who stay at Peponi, just 22 rooms on a white-sand stunner of a beach. THE Caribbean is not usual MAB territory, even though they were reared on spliffs and Bob Marley. But LaLuna in Grenada attracts middle-aged rockers, including Sir Mick himself. MEXICO sends MABS into an ethnic shopping frenzy. Deseo in Playa del Carmen is almost too minimalist, but they love the huge daybeds and Zen-like atmosphere: double £75, room only.
