All who visit this stunning bar and restaurant - a £1-million conversion of the former Norton Folgate Electric Light Station - marvel at its industrial interior. But within moments of opening earlier this year, freeholder Railtrack announced plans to demolish the site for office development. A vociferous campaign ensued, led by the likes of fashion designer Alexander McQueen, Culture Minister Chris Smith and English Heritage, and planning permission for demolition was refused by Hackney Council. Sighs of relief were heard all around the City fringes that the "Light" would continue to shine as an unmissable destination venue.
