Suvlaki heads to Brick Lane with Alfred Prasad on board

Two years after opening their first site in Soho, the team behind Athens-inspired grill restaurant Suvlaki are opening a second restaurant on Brick Lane.

For this new venture, they’ve recruited Alfred Prasad as executive chef. An industry name and impressive cook, Alfred was the youngest ever Indian chef to receive a Michelin star at the age of 29. He retained this star for his 12 years spent working at Mayfair’s Tamarind restaurant.

His experience of Indian kebabs and tandoor cooking will give him an interesting perspective when it comes to the restaurant’s signature dish: suvlaki cooked over hot coals.

Alongside the classics, grilled dishes at the new site will include wild boar sausages with smoked aubergine, spicy king prawns with dill and rose aioli, and slow-cooked lamb with chilli beetroot, vegetable cous cous and green herb sauce.

Mezze plates to share will feature eel smoked with olive and citrus wood and the traditional Greek ham siglino, smoked with sage. There will also be a moussaka on the menu as well as sides including a traditional Greek salad and homemade dips and pita bread.

A short wine list will feature only Greek producers, while there will also be Greek craft beers on offer.

Suvlaki’s co-founder, Irene Margariti, said: “Having always been a melting pot of different cultures, Brick Lane seemed a fitting location for our new home with its urban buzz and cosmopolitan vibe – everything I love about the dining culture at home in Athens”.
