Monty’s Deli: Sandwich sensation to open at Seven Dials Market after ‘heartbreaking’ Hoxton restaurant closure

Fully stacked: Monty's Deli will head to the West End next month

Monty’s Deli is the latest London favourite to be revealed as a food vendor for Seven Dials Market – just one month after it announced the closure of its flagship Hoxton restaurant.

The Jewish deli will be one of the vendors at the new food market, the first central London and indoor venture for street food connoisseurs Kerb. Monty’s Deli had been forced to close its Hackney site at the end of July, much to the dismay of east London foodies.

“It was a real heartbreaker for all of us at Monty’s and for all of our lovely customers too," said co-founder Mark Ogus, "so it's wonderful to be able to announce that we are joining Kerb’s Seven Dials Market.”

The Covent Garden location, opening next month, will boast new menu items including open-faced bagels. It will also continue to sell the deli’s famous Reuben salt beef sandwiches and New York-style egg creams.

“We’ve always felt that the West End is a great location for what we do,” said Ogus. “Some of London’s finest salt beef has been served there for generations – such as the famous, and now sadly extinct, Phil Rabin’s Nosh Bar on Great Windmill Street, or Gaby’s Deli on the Charing Cross Road.”

It has also been announced that seafood restaurant Claw will be joining Seven Dials Market, having this week announced the closure of its Carnaby Street site. A champion of sustainable British seafood, Claw will continue to sell its acclaimed seafood rolls, as well as a lobster mac and cheese dish to rival its crab-filled version of the pasta.

Rolling on: Claw will also head to Seven Dials Market, following its closure on Carnaby Street

Both Claw and Monty’s Deli return to Kerb, having launched at the market in previous years. The 22,000 square foot Seven Dials Market is set to open in September, taking over a former banana warehouse in the heart of Covent Garden.

Traders already announced for the market include vegan hotspot Club Mexicana, conveyor belt restaurant Pick & Cheese and pasta restaurant Strozzapreti from the team behind Franco Manca.
