London's best tacos

Tacos are not a regular menu fixture but Simon Luard will be doing a Taco Wars test-run of his excellent coli tacos at Brockley Market on May 12. Fresh, succulent fish, soft shells and a bit of heat.

Taco Wars organiser Jonathan Downey loves these, saying they contain “properly sourced, slow-cooked meats, rubbed in goodness and cooked fresh to order. Not a bain-marie in sight.”

Head to Lucky Chip’s Slider Bar for bulging pulled pork tacos and skilfully pickled vegetables. Go with a friend or prepare to eat for two as these are served in pairs.

I prefer the hardshell tacos here but softies are also available. Go for free-range braised carnitas or grilled chicken slathered in sour cream with a generous helping of hot salsa.

This little joint has a long taco menu and is always busy. Top bites include the chargrilled skirt steak topped with avocado mash (£6.60) and the spicy Mexican chorizo perked up with a scattering of coriander (£4.10).
