London's best alternative Easter menus 2015

A traditional Easter roast is delicious - but if you're after something different, these are six of the best alternatives London has to offer

Easter is, for many, synonymous with food - and far beyond chocolate eggs. If your ideal Easter weekend is sitting down with friends and family and over-indulging in a hearty meal, but you don't fancy a traditional roast, then take a look at these alternative Easter menus. And don't forget, you've got all of Monday to recover too. Tuck in.

OPSO

A treat: the pairing dinner at Opso is a chance to try a Greek-style Easter menu

If you want to get into the spirit of things before the Bank Holiday, OPSO are hosting a Greek Easter dinner on Wednesday April 1. Terry Kandylis, named Best Greek Sommelier 2015, will host the evening, which includes a four course menu of traditional Greek grub paired with different wines. Expect dishes such as slow cooked lamb shank with orzo, tomato jam, lemongrass and sautéed foie gras with cabbage fricassee.

Brew Dog Last Sipper

Great Scot: smoked venison haunch with warm pearl barleysalad

Pop-up Dram & Smoke are working with BrewDog to lay on a six-course, thoroughly Scottish Easter lunch with a complementary selection of Brew Dog craft beers. Expect pork belly, rabbit and, for pudding, deep fried Mars Bar. There'll even be Beer Bingo, where those who can guess which beers will be paired with what food before the meal starts will win prizes.

Ceviche Old Street

Not your usual fare: Cerviche offer an alternative with their traditional Peruvian dishes

If you're really keen to get away from anything with even a hint of Brit, try Ceviche Old Street, the new outpost (opening March 30) of Martin Morales' Peruvian restaurant. Go for Lamb’s brain fritters or try the barbecued anticucho skewers, which come with any number of meats and vegetables. Or try what the restaurant says is "Peru’s favourite lunchtime dish", Pollo a la Brasa, which is a rotisserie chicken with a secret marinade - it's a first for Ceviche. The Culpeper Kitchen

New kitchen, new menu: the Culpeper's crispy lamb breast with purple broccoli

Spitalfields pub and restaurant The Culpeper recently opened up its new first floor kitchen, where it proudly makes the most of locally-sourced and home-grown ingredients. The menu changes almost daily but when we've eaten there, fish was a speciality, making it our pick for a Good Friday supper. (Read Fay Maschler's review of The Culpeper Kitchen here).

Foxlow

This meat-loving restaurant is a well established Farringdon favourite and is now opening up a new branch in Stoke Newington. Foxlow are particularly famed for their dry-aged steak, so while lamb may be the more traditional fare, indulge yourself with a whopping great slice of beef and a large glass of red.

The Salt Yard

First-timers: this Easter is the first time The Salt Yard will open on a Sunday

For the first time ever, this Spanish-Italian charcuterie bar and restaurant is opening on Sundays, with Easter Sunday being the inaugural day. To celebrate, it's laying on a selection of dishes inspired by Sunday roasts, but with a twist. These include roast porcetta with olive oil whipped mash and Italian greens and whole baked bream with fennel gratin, fennel salad and gremolata. There are some new cocktails on the menu too, including a blood orange Mimosa, Amalfi lemon Scroppino and an "antique smoked" Negroni.
