Jude's Ice cream whips up cool new menu for Balans Soho Society

A British ice cream maker is taking over the dessert menu at a Soho restaurant — as the capital continues to swelter in a heatwave.

Family-run Jude’s Ice Cream has created four puddings which will be on the menu of Balans Soho Society in Old Compton Street for the rest of June as part of London Food Month. Each will feature one of the Hampshire firm’s best-selling ice creams or frozen yoghurts and will cost £7.50.

The menu, introduced as temperatures in London hit 34C, includes a frozen white chocolate souffle with sea salt chocolate ice cream, pistachio cake with olive oil ice cream, and a white chocolate pistachio mousse with sour cherry granola. Tim Pearce, from

Balans, said his personal stand-out dish was the tropical baked Alaska with mango and passion fruit frozen yoghurt, coconut sponge and pineapple.

Of the collaboration, he said: “I wanted to celebrate one of our best suppliers for food month. They are so important to our business.

“Balans was the first restaurant in London to stock Jude’s, so it seemed fitting. We love our puddings — it’s that thing of over-indulgence. Pudding is the last thing people order at a restaurant, so it’s got to be good.

Jude’s was established in 2002 by Theo Mezger, who began churning ice cream from his dairy farm. He went into business after spotting a gap for independent, high-quality British ice cream. His sons Alex and Chow now run the business.

Alex said: “We have known the guys [at Balans] for 10 years and they were one of our first customers so it’s great to be doing this with them.”
