A new mural paying tribute to Pride and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots has appeared in London.

Renowned street artist Pegasus, who has created works featuring Amy Winehouse and Madonna, painted the mural of two men dancing together on the side of the The Winchester pub in Angel yesterday.

Pegasus titled the work Love Always Wins. He says the piece acknowledges both progress in the fight for marriage equality and the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime both in the UK and the US, where he is from.

“This is a very different style to my usual technique, but it was important to make a bold colourful statement,” he says. “With the rise in homophobic hate crime back home in America as well as the United Kingdom, it is so important to acknowledge those who have marched, been tortured, killed and discriminated against for simply seeking safety and acceptance through equality.”

Today marks 50 years since the Stonewall riots, when police raided a gay bar in New York, sparking a series of demonstrations that became a catalyst in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights around the world.

Pride in London has chosen Jubilee as the theme for this year, paying tribute to the anniversary.

Pegasus has also released a limited edition print of the artwork today, with proceeds going to the Albert Kennedy Trust, a charity that assists young LGBTQ+ people who are homeless or live in a hostile environment.

“I am an openly gay street artist, a very rare find in this art form,” he says, “and I am proud to be in the position to join my brothers, sisters and allies in the fight for global acceptance.”
