Still hope for a touch of tradition

Solid boozer: The Hope & Anchor
10 April 2012

If we had to put our finger on the most local and traditional of the many pubs in Hammersmith, the Hope and Anchor would be it. Not trendy, not chavvy, this is a solid locals' boozer catering mainly for the residents of the attached pre-war council estate.

Away from passing trade, just hidden off the high street, it's one of those places that seems to have stopped updating itself in about 1975 - and we don't mean that negatively. Perhaps because of these factors its rather nice here, with an original 1930s, wood panelled, grade II listed interior.

Pool, darts, a jukebox and a bunch of locals who know each other is the range if entertainment you'll find here, accompanied by a basic choice of fizzy lagers. Perhaps not to everyone's taste, this pub suits its clientele perfectly and if you're after an unfailingly 'normal' pub from an era before 'gastro', then the Hope and Anchor is worth seeking out.
