Keeping its charm: The Wonder
10 April 2012

Hidden next to a green in a quiet corner of Enfield, inside this imposing pub it looks as if hasn't changed since about 1960. The public bar is just as it would've been back then, compete with bare floorboards and vinyl bench seating, while the separate saloon bar is a snug and cosy place where whiling away an afternoon with one of their well-kept ales seems rather too easy.

This is a long way from Gastropubland and the friendly landlord seems to have the measure of his loyal clientele; if you like 3 hour piano sing-alongs and live Frank Sinatra cover artists, all wrapped up in a proudly TV-free zone, then you'll love it here.

It certainly seems to be a place which encourages active participation, as they raise a fair amount of money for local charities, too.

Anthropologically fascinating, the main wonder about this place is how it's managed to survive into the 21st century without being spoiled. This endangered species is the kind of place every keen pubgoer should try - at least - once.
