BarChick's cocktail of the week: Sir Jeejeebhoy at Dishoom Kings Cross

This week BarChick takes a trip back to colonial India
Stylish: the Sir Jeejeebhoy cocktail is served in an apothecary-style bottle
Barchick3 March 2015

The drink: Sir Jeejeebhoy

What’s in it? Ceylon Arrack, coconut water and orange bitters.

Why should we try it? This was one of the drinks that earnt Carl Brown, the Daru-walla of Dishoom, the Young British Foodies award in the drinks category, and deservedly so. The bottle-aged Old Fashioned comes in two sizes of ‘peg’ (an old world measurement): chota (small) or burra (large), both Hindi phrases adopted by the British in colonial India. It’s served in an apothecary-style bottle, which you pour over hand-chipped ice in a cut-glass tumbler. It’s not just about playful presentation though, the coconut water lengthens the Ceylon Arrack — a naturally distilled liquor from the sap of the coconut flower handcrafted in Sri Lanka — making it soft on the palate and deceptively easy to drink. An Old Fashioned for beginners.

Where do we get it? Covent Garden’s Dishoom was just ranked first place in Yelp’s Top 100 places to eat in the UK. The Sir Jeejeebhoy can be found in Shamil and Kavi Thakrar's latest outpost in Kings Cross. Paying homage to the Irani cafes that appeared in Bombay in the first half of the 20th century, they’ve transformed this former railway transit shed into a grand ‘godwon’, decorated after multiple research trips to India. If it’s just cocktails you’re after, head to the basement bar, The Permit Room — a reference to the permit once required to purchase alcohol in Bombay.
