A flypast will take place today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Britain, with a fleet of aircraft – including Hurricanes and Spitfires – due to fly over London at 11.45am.

The aircraft, also including a Eurofighter Typhoon painted in the colours used at the time of the battle, will fly directly over Buckingham Palace as the pinnacle of the show – so head outside if you’re in the Westminster, St James’s or Victoria areas.

The Battle of Britain was an attempt by the German air force to gain superiority over the RAF, and it is widely acknowledged that their failure to do so was one of the key turning points of the Second World War. The battle lasted from July to September 1940.

Six surviving pilots from the Battle of Britain will join the Queen at Buckingham Palace for the commemoration ceremony.
