Ramadan comes to an end this week and thousands of people all over London will be celebrating Eid al-Fitr.

Eid al-Fitr is the breaking of the fast, lasting for three days at the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting in the Islamic calendar. Food and drink isn’t consumed between sunrise and sunset, so Eid is cause for great celebration.

Every year thousands flood to Trafalgar Square for the Mayor of London’s Eid Festival event. This year’s falls on Saturday June 23 and is free to attend (no tickets required) with food and sweet treats from Bamboo House, Bombay Street Food, The Cane Press and Nusa Dua to name a few.

On the main stage, performers bring entertainment from around the world, hosted by presenter Sameena Ali-Khan and journalist Remona Aly.

Stage acts include musical duo Pearls of Islam, who have been pioneers in the Muslim female artists’ scene, and German-born Palestinian darbuka player Simona Abdallah, the first female musician from an Arabic background to play the instrument professionally. Also making appearances are The Al-Sadiq and Al-Zahra School Choir, who performed at the Grenfell Tower memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral, and Voice of Peace Children’s Choir. Native Sun bring their fusion of African rhythm and hip hop, with rapper Mohammed Yahya an singer Sarina Leah.

There will also be guest appearances, including Mariah Idrissi, who was the first hijab-wearing model to be featured in an international campaign.

The celebration runs from 12-6pm on June 23 in Trafalgar Square.

In east London, Illford will be hosting an Eid in the Park on June 15, 16 and 17. It will be held at Goodmayes Park (just off Green Lane) and will kick off with a 10am prayer.

Muslims from Illford's Redbridge Islamic centre will also be meeting in the park from 8:30am.

Over in west London, Southall Park will host a celebration over weekend and there's a beach theme for the event.
