Early Man: Wallace and Gromit creators teaching animation at new craft festival

Cracking crafts, Gromit: Wallace and Gromit creators will teach animation tricks at new craft festival

Londoners can discover how award-winning animator Aardman creates characters like Wallace And Gromit and Dug from Early Man at a new festival — and have a go at creating their own.

MakeMore is a five-day craft festival bringing together more than 100 experts spanning animation, ceramics, design, painting, printmaking and woodwork.

It takes place in Victoria Park in east London over the August bank holiday. Live music and theatre will feature alongside workshops and activities.

The star attraction will be clay modelling sessions by Helen Javes, who has worked in Aardman’s art department for 15 years creating characters for Wallace And Gromit, Shaun The Sheep and Morph. Aardman story artist Sylvia Bull will run storyboarding workshops.

Other attractions include street art skills from south-east London’s Nathan Bowen; beekeeping at home with Bermondsey Street Bees; bushcraft with The Exploration Society; and art by Adébayo Bolaji, a resident at Zurich’s Galerie Proarta.

MakeMore creative director John Wilkie said: “The maker movement is everything that’s good about London — creativity, design and energy.”

The festival runs from August 23 to 27. Tickets go on sale today at makemore.art.
