A summer like no other

London’s cultural scene is proving to be as exciting as the sporting Olympics and there are more highlights to come. Continuing this week and until 9 September, the Mayor of London presents exciting shows, performances and surprises, but these are once-in-a-lifetime experiences — so don’t miss out on this summer like no other

London 2012 has been full of memorable and spectacular sights. Northala Fields, the four giant man-made mounds you can see from the A40, are among them. They are being transformed by a series of striking greenwood towers which represent the gathering of cultures and our connection with the four corners of the earth.

This hidden gem by Red Earth is just one of the Secrets presented by the Mayor of London as part of the London 2012 Festival. The installation, from 8 to 27 August, is a perfect reason to discover this nature reserve and other lesser known London secret spaces, such as Fairlop Waters in Redbridge, where you will be mesmerised by an interactive musical sculpture called Nothing Is Set In Stone.

It’s also Showtime in every part of the capital over the next five weeks, with world-class performers entertaining Londoners in Victoria Park and Blackheath Live Sites this weekend.

Showtime, presented by the Mayor of London, is part of the London 2012 Festival and supported by Arts Council England. You can look forward to acts including Red Poppy, incredible all-female drummers last seen at the Beijing Opening Ceremony, and escapology on bicycles with the Strangelings.

In the next few weeks in town centres and parks across the city look out for buoyant bungee dancing from Upswing, comic capers from the Bash Street Theatre and more incredible feats of beat boxing from Lyrix Organix.

Osadia, mad Catalan hairdressers, will be styling the city as space-age fashionistas and Close Act bring their Saurus dinosaurs to the streets of London.

As you’re travelling around London don’t forget to look out for Hide and Seek's 99 Tiny Games, an amazing array of tiny real-world games you can play with whatever you’ve got to hand. Also watch out for pop-up cinemas across the city, with forthcoming events in Sydenham and Bellingham.

There’s so much more happening in the next five weeks that you won’t want to miss...
