Love Island swept the nation last year as the ITV2 show packed full of love-seeking singletons hit a new ratings record and brought a sizzle to all our summers.

For seven weeks, viewers watched in their scores as the likes of Amber Davies, Kem Cetinay, Chris Hughes, Olivia Attwood and Marcel Somerville found love and fame at the same time.

And now, as summer draws closer, it’s time to get excited once more as we count down to the return of the reality show, returning in June.

But what is Love Island? How does it work? Who’s involved? Here’s everything you need to know before it returns on Monday 4 June.

What is Love Island?

A group of attractive singletons ready to find the one jet off for to Majorca to stay in a luxury villa and have their every move watched by a camera crew, relayed to millions around the country each evening.

The aim is simple – couple up with somebody you fancy, get to know them, fall for them and live happily ever after (or at least until you win the show) – but the reality is very, very different. Throughout the weeks, viewers watch as couples are torn apart by new additions and recouplings and the public even get the chance to boot Islanders off of the Island and force new pairings, throwing virtual spanners in the works.

Tasks are a daily part of the show, putting the Islanders to the tests both individually and in their couples and, of course, participants are sent on dates to get to know each other with sparks sometimes flying and war of words erupting other times.

Who are the contestants?

The 11 singletons headed into the villa have been revealed , including an A&E doctor and a West End performer amongst the usual models and personal trainers.

Dani Mas Dyer, who was heavily linked to the show after quitting Survival of the Fittest, is confirmed to appear in the new series along with fellow girls Kendall Rae-Knight, Hayley Hughes, Laura Anderson and Samira Mighty.

Dr Alex George, Eyal Booker, Niall Aslan, Jack Fincham, Adam Collard and Wes Nelson make up the guys.

Who hosts Love Island?

Caroline Flack hosts the sunshine success each year, posing this year as a pilot in the latest trailer. Flack doesn’t stay at the villa, of course, but pops in regularly to deliver news of varying levels of excitement and also to kick people out.

The show's voiceover is provided by Scottish comedian Iain Stirling.

What do they win?

Going on last year, the winning couple are given £50,000. Well, in theory. In practice, the winning couple get given the chance to split or steal the fortune. If both split, they share the cash. If one steals, they get the jackpot. If both steal then, we guess, both go home empty handed.

But since the show has such a platform for breeding stars, most contestants are winners really as they bag reality shows of their own, club appearance fees and endorsement deals.

Will there be anything different this year?

The series will last for eight weeks, one week longer than last year, meaning we have two months of Spanish shenanigans to enjoy.

There will also be less smoking on screen after a new rule introduce means Islanders will only be permitted to smoke outside the villa, in a designated area.

When does it start?

Love Island will return to ITV2 on Monday 4 June at 9pm with a 95 minute show.
