It was never going to be an easy watch, but David Lynch has out David-Lynched himself with the season three premiere of Twin Peaks.

The US director revived the cult TV show – and made sure to make it as bizarre and baffling as possible for viewers.

Twin Peaks: The Return, which debuted on Sunday night, picked up where the game-changing 90’s series left off.

Fans were reintroduced to Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), who has been trapped in the Black Lodge for 25 years, as he was reunited with homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose death he was investigating in the original series.

The action alternated between Twin Peaks, New York City, and Buckhorn, South Dakota as Lynch introduced viewers to various storylines, including a young man guarding a glass box and a brutal murder.

The premiere proved to be a tough watch for some of the most hardcore fans with one revealing they had “zero idea” what was happening, while another said it was “too damn much”.

MacLachlan recently opened up about reprising his role as the coffee and pie-loving agent, saying he found it difficult to get back into character.

"To be honest, it didn't come straight away," he told Radio Times.

"I had to feel my way into it and rely on David's (director David Lynch) outside eyes on the character more than I thought I would, actually.

"I needed a bit of help to get back into his skin."

The original show was set in a small logging town in the US north-west, where the body of murdered Laura Palmer was discovered near a riverbank.

Twin Peaks airs 2am on Mondays on Sky Atlantic. It is repeated at 9pm the following day.
