Good news, Tom Hardy fans – Taboo is officially getting a second series.

The BBC show – co-created, co-written by, and starring Hardy – is due to return for eight more episodes following the end of its first run.

The Victorian-era period drama series stars Hardy as James Keziah Delaney, a man presumed dead who returns from Africa to claim his inheritance after the death of his father.

Taboo was produced by Steven Knight, also behind Birmingham gangster drama Peaky Blinders, and has been a hit on FX in the States.

“We are grateful and excited to continue our relationship with the BBC and FX in contributing towards British drama,” Hardy said. “Fantastic news.”

BBC Drama controller Piers Wenger said: “Tom and Steve and the show’s brilliant producers are promising something daring, different but equally unmissable and I’m delighted that the BBC is partnering with FX once again to roll ‘Taboo’ out to audiences across the world.”

The show has been a ratings hit in the UK, with 8.53 million viewers tuning into the premiere on BBC One or catching it later on iPlayer.
