Often the TV ratings war in the Autumn is pitched as a battle between Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor, but with viewership for Simon Cowell’s singing competition waning, another unexpected contender has entered the race.

The Antiques Roadshow, of all things, managed to beat The X Factor in the ratings at three separate points during the Sunday night results show.

At 8pm the BBC show had 600,000 more viewers than Cowell's contest, and at 8.20pm and 8.30pm it had 200,000 more viewers than The X Factor.

However, at its peak The X Factor had 6.7 million viewers, compared to 5.9 million viewers for the Antiques Roadshow.

On Saturday night, Strictly Come Dancing pulled in an average of 9.35 million viewers for its Halloween-themed episode, while The X Factor averaged 5.6 million viewers as the live shows began.

However, speaking to the Mail Online, a source said that The X Factor is averaging 8.8 million viewers once recorded viewing is taken into account.

Can Simon Cowell pull the show around to prove it’s no antique itself?
