The Durrells: Everything you need to know as the charming Thirties drama heads for its final season

The show's fourth series will be its last outing on ITV

All good things must come to an end, and ITV’s much-loved period drama The Durrells is no exception.

Set in the 1930s and based on the autobiographical novels of My Family and Other Animals author Gerald Durrell, the series has charmed viewers with its depiction of the British family’s exploits and misadventures as they adapt to life on the island of Corfu.

Now, after three successful seasons, the show is coming to an end, with Keeley Hawes and co starring in a final batch of episodes airing this spring.

Here’s everything you need to know as we prepare to bid goodbye to Corfu.

In case you’ve missed the show so far, The Durrells takes inspiration from the trilogy of novels which chart the family’s experiences on the Greek Island.

The series began as an adaptation of My Family and Other Animals, the author’s best-known and best-loved book.

Given that the programme has its roots in real life, The Durrells couldn’t go on indefinitely: season three was set in 1937, and it’s thought that the new series will chart the family’s final year on the island, before the outbreak of World War II prompted most of them to return to England.

Hawes, who plays family matriarch Louisa, has hinted at a heart-wrenching finale for the show, telling The Mirror that it was “terribly sad reading the final script”.

“It’s a bittersweet thing,” she told the paper. “I’m so pleased that we have had the opportunity to do this series and finish it off properly, to tell their story and give them a proper send-off feels like the right thing to do.

“And it feels like the right thing to do for us because we are like a little family.”
