Emmerdale beat the likes of EastEnders and Coronation Street to be named Best British Soap at the British Soap Awards 2016.

The Yorkshire-set soap triumphed in the viewer-voted category, coming ahead of last year’s winner EastEnders.

The show received five awards across the night, including Best Actor and Best Male Dramatic Performace for Danny Miller, and Scene of the Year for Val’s Death.

Also winning five awards was EastEnders, with Lacey Turner winning Best Actress, and Best Newcomer going to Bonnie Langford.

The best storyline award also went to the BBC series for ‘Stacey’s Postpartum Depression’.

While Coronation Street’s live episode missed out on the Best Single Episode award, which instead went to Doctors for The Heart of England, Corrie won four awards overall.

The ITV series received Best Comedy Performance for Patti Clare, while Connor McIntyre won Villain of the Year. Sally Dynevor and Joe Duttine won Best On-Screen Partnership.

The Outstanding Achievement Award for On-Screen went to Steve McFadden, who has played EastEnders’ Phil Mitchell for 26 years. The Off-Screen award went to Corrie and Emmerdale casting director James Bain.
