After managing to get a 10 from the judges in the third week of the competition, the pressure was on for ex-The Wanted singer Jay McGuiness to wow again in the fourth week of Strictly Come Dancing.

However, the weight of expectation ultimately proved too much. Performing a quickstep with his dance partner Aliona Vilani to The Who’s classic My Generation, McGuiness stumbled a few times on the dance floor and struggled with his steps.

The judges were mixed in their response, with Bruno Tonioli saying: “In theory, this should have been a barnstormer. In practice, there were quite a few buts.”

Darcey Bussell was more supportive, recognising the difficulty of the dance.

“Don’t worry about this,” she said. “Aliona gave you a very challenging quickstep and I know you can come back next week.”

Len Goodman was also philosophical about McGuiness’ performance.

“It’s a shame because these things happen,” Goodman said. “It’s a very fast dance, there’s a lot to think about, and your feet were doing more than your brain could handle.”

However, Craig Revel-Horwood was much more succinct and damning in his criticism, simply stating: “Just too many mistakes, sadly”.

McGuiness received a score of 25 from the judges, with Craig only offering up five points.

Elsewhere in the show, Katie Derham topped the leader board after receiving 33 points from the judges for her Viennese waltz with partner Anton Du Beke.

Jamelia, Helen George, Peter Andre and Kellie Bright were all awarded 32 points each, while Georgia May Foote impressed with her quickstep, receiving nine points from Len Goodman.

Ainsley Harriott was praised by the judges after being in the dance-off last week, receiving 26 points for his waltz.

With a dance-off set to take place in Sunday’s show, Jeremy Vine and Kirsty Gallacher will be hoping for the public vote to bring them out of the bottom two.
