The producers of new BBC drama SS-GB have spoken out about how the world has already changed since they made the show.

The series, debuting on Sunday night, is set in an alternate history where the Nazis won the Battle of Britain and the UK is under their rule.

The tense thriller, set in 1941, is based on Len Deighton’s novel, first published in 1978.

“I don't think any of us would have thought a year ago that [President Donald] Trump would have been in power, so that I find quite terrifying," says executive producer, Sally Woodward Gentle.

She added: “Of course at this point [in the show], America is still neutral so you've got the whole notion of a neutral America in it, which I think is fascinating.

“And Russia and Germany are friends...”

Producer Robert Wade made more direct parallels between the new US President and the show’s depiction of America.

“Trump was using the expression 'America First' a lot and that comes from the Second World War," he said.

“And an element of this show is about trying to get the Americans into the war.”
