Sky and HBO have announced they are making a documentary series about the 1999 murder of US high school student Hae Min Lee.

The killing, which saw Syed imprisoned for life in 2000, was previously examined in the hugely popular Serial podcast in 2014.

The new series - entitled The Case Against Adnan Syed and directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg - will explore the 18-year-old's disappearance and murder and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed.

In production since 2015, the documentary will look at the events leading up to the disappearance of the Baltimore County high school pupil, from high school romance to forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance, the original police investigation and the present day.

Convicted: Adnan Syed has been serving a life sentence for Hae Min Lee's murder

The series is said to present "new discoveries as well as ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state's case" and features exclusive access to Syed, the defence team, the Syed family, friends and teachers of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed, and members of Baltimore City law enforcement.

Zai Bennett, director of programming at Sky Entertainment UK & Ireland, said: "We're excited to partner with our friends at HBO to bring this fascinating and gripping case to television screens worldwide.

"We'll be offering viewers a compelling window into one of the most talked about murder cases in recent years.

"The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing."

The four-hour documentary will debut in Europe on Sky Atlantic and in the US on HBO.
