It’s just over a month until Sherlock makes his long-awaited return to the BBC – and a new set of Series 4 pictures are sure to make fans even more excited.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are revising their roles as Holmes and Watson three years after Series 3 aired.

Three new episodes have been made – and it seems the central dynamic has changed.

Watson married Mary Watson during Series 3, and the pair now have a baby – something which Sherlock seems decidedly unimpressed by.

In images from the first episode, titled The Six Thatchers, Sherlock, Watson and Mary are seen out in the street with a baby and dog in tow.

The photos also reveal a better look at Toby Jones’ villain, named Culverton Smith, who is confirmed to appear in Episode 1.

Smith is a character from Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes works, appearing in short story The Adventure of the Dying Detective.

It seems likely that Smith will also feature in the second episode of Series 4, which has the title The Lying Detective.

There’s also an additional look at Mark Gatiss, returning as Sherlock’s even smarter brother Mycroft, and landlady Mrs Hudson.

With the most recent Sherlock episode being last year's one-off special, largely set in an imagined version of the Victorian era, fans will be more than ready for the show's proper return. Bring on January 1.
