New Channel 4 thriller Shamed explores what happens when shaming on social media has real-life consequences.

The hour-long show tells the story of Sarah Ivy, played by Game of Thrones star Faye Marsay, who was publically humiliated when she was 17.

Fast forward 10 years and she, with help from her brother James, seeks retribution by kidnapping two men she believes were involved in the incident.

The first is Nathan Bowyar – played by Babylon star Nick Blood – who is preparing to set off on his when he’s captured and taken to an unknown location.

He is joined by another man Mani Yalla - but despite Sarah being adamant she knows who they are, the two men struggle to recall her.

However, the connection between the three soon becomes clear, with the role modern media has played in shaming each of them also being revealed over the course of the episode.

The new thriller is written and directed by My Mad Fat Diary scribe Anthony Philipson who said he is ‘thrilled’ to have the opportunity to work on a story so relevant to today’s society.

He said: “I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity by the factual department to write and direct my first ever single drama.

“It’s an important story that deals with a very modern phenomenon but with a surprising and dramatic interpretation.”

Nick Mirsky, head of documentaries at Channel 4, described the show as a ‘brilliantly crafted’ modern revenge story.

“This is a modern revenge story brilliantly crafted with a mixture of documentary curiosity and dramatic intensity,” he commented.

“I am really proud to have it coming to the documentaries department.”

Shamed starts on Tuesday, December 19 at 9pm on Channel 4.
