Robbie Williams hilariously interrupted the Loose Women panel live on air after misunderstanding his cue.

The former Take That singer was standing at the back of the ITV studio audience as his wife Ayda Field sat on the panel during the introduction segment on Friday afternoon.

As the presenters announced that the former X Factor judge would be a guest later on in the show, the camera panned to him as he waved to the viewers watching at home.

The daytime show then displayed an old clip of Williams and Field previously on the show together as the panel - which also included Brenda Williams, Nadia Sawalha and Kaye Adams - prepared to get on with the programme.

Williams then walked on to the set as Field exclaimed: “Look at you, you aren’t on yet!"

Attempting to embrace his wife, he asked: “It’s not live is it?”

The studio audience - and panel - erupted into laughter as they confirmed the show was in fact airing live.

Unsure, he asked one more time: “What, you started?”

Finally realising his mistake, he speedily walked back to the back of the audience, adding: “I was just trying to see my wife. Sorry. Carry on everybody!”

Amused, his wife called out: “I love you boo! See you in a bit.”

The show continued with its regular scheduling – a discussion about DNA test for babies followed by an interview with Coronation Street legend Julie Hesmondhalgh – before inviting Williams back for his intended slot.

During his interview on Friday's show, he discussed his first-ever festive album, The Christmas Present which was released on November 22 and features guest appearances from Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams and Jamie Cullum — as well as heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, who lends vocals to the song Bad Sharon.

The album sees Williams putting his own spin on a number of yuletide classics, from Merry Xmas Everybody to Winter Wonderland.

There will also be a number of original songs spread across the two-disc release, with titles including Yeah! It’s Christmas and Let’s Not Go Shopping.
