If you love dogs, prepare to melt into a puddle of tears and warm fuzzy feelings at Channel 4’s new series.

In Rescue Dog to Super Dog, cute canines from difficult backgrounds are tasked with becoming helper dogs for people with disabilities.

The plan is to give a new lease of life to the dogs, and to those who need a puppy companion.

In Episode 1, we meet Emily – a 26 year-old woman who suffers from narcolepsy and cataplexy, which means that up to 30 times a day she can collapse with very little warning.

That makes life dangerous – as she could pass out in the street at any time or suffer from muscle-paralysis attacks that render her vulnerable in public places.

“The idea of finding a rescue dog who could rescue me is just really, really amazing,” she says.

Enter Poppy from the Dog’s Trust Centre in Basildon, a three year-old boxer cross, who was found wandering the streets of Ireland. She's still on her way to recovery, but Poppy has the problem-solving capacity that could help Emily out in her moments of need.

Elsewhere there’s 29 year-old Alan with Tourette syndrome, who hopes a dog can help him increase his motivation and control his tic attacks.

It’s wonderful stuff that’ll leave you asking: what did we ever do to deserve dogs?
