Prime Minister Theresa May has snubbed BBC drama Bodyguard, which follows the tangled life of a female home secretary, saying she likes to watch TV to “unwind”.

The BBC drama, penned by Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio, enjoyed high ratings for its launch over Bank Holiday Weekend with 6 million tuning in to the political thriller.

But the Prime Minister proved not everybody is a fan of the Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes drama, which follows home secretary Julia Montague and her personal protection officer David Budd.

Speaking on a press tour of Africa, Mrs May said: “I watch TV to unwind.

“I'm not sure a drama about a female home secretary is the best way for me to do that.”

Mrs May reportedly switched off the drama after 20 minutes of the first episode, which saw Budd prevent a terrorist attack before being assigned to his new protection post.

The drama continued on Monday as terror crept into the fold once again and passions heightened between the two lead characters.

However, viewers couldn’t help but point out the “new hero” of the show – the tea-loving teacher who clutched at her hot drink as she stewarded her kids to safety.

Bodyguard continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
