It’s the most inspiring time of the year again as we settle down to watch the Pride of Britain Awards 2018.

From fearless firefighters to army heroes and amazing young carers, the awards – hosted by the Daily Mirror and in partnership with TSB – honour the very best of our society.

Celebrities turned out in force to celebrate the nominees and winners at the ceremony on Monday October 29.

And there were plenty of stars involved in handing out awards and surprising those special recipients both on and off the stage.

Ahead of tonight’s broadcast, here is what you need to know….

What are the Pride of Britain Awards?

The annual awards, now in their 20th year, celebrate the extraordinary within our society. For many recipients, the ceremony is the first time their amazing actions are highlighted on a wider scale.

Nominations pour in from the public throughout the year, each story leaving judges in awe with their own special story to tell. They’re whittled down to a shortlist before the winners are chosen, and announced at the ceremony.

Who hosts the awards?

The star-studded bash, held at Grosvenor House in London, is hosted by former Countdown maths whizz Carol Vorderman – and has been every year since inception.

But throughout the evening, categories are presented by a wide range of celebrities, often with a connection to the recipient in some form. There are even appearances from royalty.

Who are some of the winners?

Ella Chadwick, 11, won a Child of Courage award and got a special visit from former England and Manchester United ace David Beckham at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Ella, who has spent a lot of time in GOSH because of congenital nephrotic syndrome, dedicated her time to fundraising for the hospital as well as making get well soon cards for fellow patients.

Max Johnson, 8, also received a Child of Courage for his part in changing an organ donation rule.

The British Cave Rescue Team who saw the safe bringing ashore of the trapped Thai football team and their coach earlier this year were given the Outstanding Bravery Award.

Omar Sharif, a former gang member, was crowned Prince’s Trust Young Achiever after turning his life around following the death of three of his friends. He then set up his own business before turning his attention to inspiring others struggling with social issues.

The West Midlands Fire Service scooped the Emergency Services Award after the awe-inspiring story of how they saved a man on the way to propose to his girlfriend following a car crash which left him impaled on a 10ft pole.

When are the awards on?

The Pride Of Britain Awards air Tuesday November 6 at 8pm on ITV.
