Piers Morgan has opened up about his own cancer scare in the wake of Bill Turnbull’s diagnosis.

Speaking on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, the TV presenter revealed that he was told he might have the disease.

The scare came when the host was found to have high levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in his blood.

However, he was soon given the all-clear but Morgan was quick to admit how terrifying the experience of waiting for the results had been.

"I had a bit of a scare with this a few years ago but fortunately for me it was all right, but my levels were high raised.

“It really struck me when I had that little scare – everyone has had a scare – that awful feeling of dread that this might be it and you have ‘the big C’.”

The news comes after Morgan’s co-host Susanna Reid paid tribute to her former BBC Breakfast colleague Turnbull whose cancer was found to have spread to his ribs, hips, pelvis and leg.

She said: “We want to give a big televisual hug this morning to our colleague – my former co-host – Bill Turnbull, who has revealed in the Radio Times he has prostate cancer, and I’m afraid it has spread to his bones.

“He is being positive, and pragmatic – and he’s a fine figure of a man, we all love him, he’s been on this programme a couple of times.

“It’s a difficult time for him but he has an amazing, strong wife in Cesi, and a strong family – and he is saying this morning to all of you men of a particular age, please get your PSA levels checked.”

Speaking about the tragic news in an interview with Radio Times Turnbull said: “You have to be positive, don’t you? I know I’m not going to get cured and I’m realistic about the long-term prospects, but they’re not bad.

“Most importantly, I really do think I’ve had a wonderful life, with amazing experiences as a reporter and a presenter.

“And if it was all to end tomorrow, I couldn’t have any complaints. I’ve had a really marvellous time.”
