Piers Morgan may have felt brave as he battled through his first day back at Good Morning Britain with three broken ribs – but viewers refused to offer a sympathetic ear.

Morgan was reunited with his co-host Susanna Reid as the pair returned to breakfast TV after enjoying a lengthy summer break, which saw Morgan break three bones after falling on his “a***”.

Morgan told viewers he could have taken the morning off but decided to man-up, despite being in “agony”.

He said: “I’ve got three broken ribs, but as I’ve been saying for the last few years on national television, you’ve got to man up when these things happen.

“I mean, I could have stayed in bed, laying there with my broken bones feeling sorry for myself but no, children, I came in and I manned up.

“It’s called getting on with life and rising to the challenge. So here I am in agony.”

Reid joked that she was “in agony” having to listen to Morgan’s spiel – and the viewers’ felt her pain.

One wrote: “Piers, broken ribs are not a serious injury. At worst you'll get out of breath while sitting and talking on television.”

Morgan was replaced by Richard Madeley, Eamonn Holmes and Jeremy Kyle while Kate Garraway, Charlotte Hawkins and Ranvir Singh stood in for Reid during the summer break.
