Piers Morgan forced to fight for job after Good Morning Britain viewers vote to get him sacked

Morgan made a rallying cry to the public to keep him on breakfast TV

Piers Morgan was forced to fight for his job on Good Morning Britain after the breakfast show ran a poll on whether or not he should be sacked before Christmas.

His co-host Susanna Reid urged viewers to vote as they kicked off Monday morning’s show with the Twitter poll which saw 52 per cent vote in favour of his firing.

Reid cracked a Brexit joke as she read out the result, saying: “Should Piers Morgan be sacked before Christmas? Fifty two per cent says yes.

“As we know 52 per cent is enough to rule the roost in elections...”

Unsure of how fair the poll was, Morgan complained: “Crucially there are no ‘don’t know’ options there.”

Reid hit back: “You can’t do a ‘don’t know’ in referendums.”

In a rallying cry to the public to keep him on breakfast TV he said: “I’m telling you you’ll get me sacked and then where will you be? You’ll wake up without me shouting at you.

“The British public are about to ruin Good Morning Britain. Just watch it.”

He then read out a handful of tweets from viewers who voiced their upset at the possibility of not seeing Morgan on the show.

One tweeted: “Absolutely not – it would become as dull as BBC Breakfast without him – he’s a ratings puller and it's a struggle to watch without him on it.”

Another wrote: “No way! @piersmorgan is the only reason I watch GMB! Brilliant at what he does and has me either cringing or laughing every single morning! Love him!!!!!!!!”

Others were keen to see him lose his job with one posting: “Definitely and please don’t come back. Enough of the loudness smugness over talking everyone else and not letting them get a word in.”

Another tweeted: “He should be sacked before the end of the day, he’s just too annoying first thing on a morning.”

But his passionate pitch for keeping his job paid off with the poll later swinging in his favour with 45 per cent saying he shouldn’t be sacked.

The poll comes days after Morgan reignited his feud with BBC Breakfast after Good Morning Britain celebrated its most watched episode ever.

“A couple of positives for GMB overnight, Monday’s show was the highest rated show in our history, in 937 programmes,” he said.

“So thank you for watching, we really appreciate it. Apologies to our friends at BBC Breakfast who are getting their backsides booted.”

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am
