Piers Morgan called Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield “snivelling little wretches” after This Morning picked up another National Television Award.

The Good Morning Britain anchor mocked the This Morning duo after the breakfast show lost out on the Best Daytime gong on Tuesday night despite Schofield giving him a kiss.

After the ITV account sent his commiserations to Morgan, the presenter joked about the pair as he sent a congratulatory tweet: “Absolutely thrilled for the snivelling little wretches.”

On his way up to the stage, Schofield kissed a furious-looking Morgan before the pair shook hands as Schofield got ready to rush up to accept the award.

An hour before, Schofield and Morgan had gone head-to-head on the red carpet as they prepared for their award night rivalry.

Morgan did not look a happy bunny as Old People's Home For 4 Year Olds duo Ken, a retired headmaster, and little star Lily announced the winners.

He later announced on Twitter that he would be throwing "everything" out of the pram after they failed to win the award.

And the official GMB account vowed to "get This Morning back next year" as they called for a "second referendum" on the viewer-voted category.

Morgan had promised to go vegan if Good Morning Britain had won the coveted award, snatching it away from This Morning who have held the gong since 2011.

Speaking on the morning show, Morgan said: “I pledge to go vegan for a week if we win – which could actually kill me.

“You should vote for us really because This Morning always win it and it’s boring that they always win.

"They’ve used half naked men to get your vote which is sexist and demeaning and for that reason they should be punished. Our friends at BBC Breakfast didn’t get on the shortlist – just imagine how much that would annoy them if we were to win.”

Schofield said on collecting the award: "Thank you so, so much for voting for us. We never take it for granted. Our This Morning family are amazing. Our viewers are part of the This Morning family."

Willoughby added: "This is a special year for This Morning."

Both hosts expressed how "lucky" they were to work with each other every day, and thanked the staff of the show.
