Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has tweeted that he earns £22.5million after responding to a journalist who challenged others on Twitter to share their salary details.

However, as it has previously been reported that Morgan earns around £1.5million for his presenting role on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, social media users were quick to suggest the large sum must be a joke.

The post came amidst a backlash over Morgan’s leak of figures from the list of BBC top earners, which he shared with his Twitter followers.

Morgan revealed information about certain BBC staff members’ salaries shortly before the embargo was due to be lifted.

His move drew criticism from a number of high-profile journalists, which only intensified as he called Sky News senior political correspondent Beth Rigby ‘petal’ leading to accusations of sexism.

After Barbara Speed, a journalist at i Newspaper tweeted to her followers: “Thing is though, for all this chat and judgement who would just openly tweet their salary right now? Go on, I dare you.”

Morgan responded by posting “£22,500,000.”

His tweet attracted allegations that the presenter must be joking, with Greg Lambden writing “Bulls**t according to Forbes”, while Stinson Hunter replied “He was clearly taking the piss mate”.

As well as his job on ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain, Morgan also fronts other ITV programmes and works as a columnist for the Daily Mail, so it is possible he earns more than just the reported £1.5million.

It does, however, seem unlikely that even his total earnings add up to as much as £22.5million.
