Every so often a comedy series comes along that transcends just being funny or truthful – the ones that audiences hold most dearly are the ones with charm and heart.

Peter Kay’s Car Share was exactly that. The simple premise saw the Bolton comedian’s character John Redmond forced to give his colleague Kayleigh Kitson (Sian Gibson) lifts to work thanks to a new buddy-up scheme.

What emerged were six loveable episodes packed with easy-going but properly rib-tickling humour, with a star-making performance from Gibson.

Now it’s back for Series 2 – here’s what you need to know.

1) They’re not commuting together anymore

The end of Series 1 saw Kayleigh move in with her sister – meaning she no longer lives near John for him to drive her into work.

Car Share is permeated by a bubbling will-they-won’t-they romance, but could the change of routine throw a spanner in the works for the pair?

2) It’s only four episodes this time

The bad news is that this is a shorter series – last time fans were treated to six half-hour episodes, while Series 2 only consists of four instalments.

3) It’s going up in full on iPlayer

The good news is that the BBC were clearly pleased about Car Share’s success on iPlayer. Series 1 was streaming in full for viewers to binge and was a huge success, so the same trick is being repeated here.

After Episode 1 of the new series airs at 9pm, all four new instalments will be up for streaming on iPlayer.

4) The music is still perfectly chosen

If there was a third main character in Car Share, it would be the radio that Kayleigh and John sing along to on their way to work.

The (entirely fictional) Forever FM continues to crank out the tunes in the new series, while the first episode also includes impressively detailed references to the NOW 48 compilation album.

5) The chemistry between Peter Kay and Sian Gibson is ultra-charming

The reason Car Share became such a big hit was the chemistry between Kay and Gibson, and that’s no different in Series 2. The pair have been friends for years, and their on-screen repartee is entirely believable.

“Casting Sian was the best decision I ever made,” Kay says. “I was grateful that the BBC trusted my decision as I knew if we could capture even just a fraction of our friendship then maybe that would be the magic that people would enjoy the most.”

6) There’s a musician in the cast

There’s a well-known Manchester-based musician in the cast for Series 2 – and while we can’t give it away here, they make their debut at the end of the first episode.
