Nigella Lawson has slammed reality cookery shows for making viewers “fraught at home” due to their editing.

The celebrated cook, who has her own shows on the BBC, branded cooking competitions on the small screen for being “flawless”, which can negatively affect the audience.

She told podcast Salt + Spine: “People are meant to be pretending that their home kitchen and table is a restaurant kitchen or table.

“And they should be producing food that requires a great deal of technique and is plated individually.

“That would make anyone get fraught at home. I wouldn’t want to do that.”

Lawson added: “What’s affected people in a way that I find unhelpful is television, more than anything else.

“Which is why I feel it’s important that I make television programmes with my lousy chopping and so forth.

“One, because people see everything looking so flawless on TV. But also I think because it takes away the notion that you have to do things quite a lot.”

In recent years, Lawson has hosted an array of shows on BBC TWO including Nigella: At My Table in 2017 and Simply Nigella in 2015.

The 58-year-old’s presenting style is often a hit with viewers, with innuendos often thrown into the mix on screen - although she recently hit back at such accusations .
