After making his debut in Jessica Jones, Marvel hero Luke Cage has received his own Netflix series – and the first trailer has arrived.

The series, which takes place in the same universe as Jessica Jones and Daredevil, as well as the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to tell the origin story of the bullet-proof superhero.

“I was put in some tank like an exotic fish. Came out with abilities,” he explains, with shots depicting how he first got his powers.

Moving the action from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem, the show will once again star Mike Colter in the role, and looks to take a similar route to Daredevil with a focus on gangsters and organised crime.

Mahershala Ali, known for his roles in House of Cards and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay is playing villain Cottonmouth, a notorious drug kingpin from the comic books.

The series seems to be taking the tone of a gritty crime drama, offering a similar sense of realism to Netflix’s other Marvel series – with Cage’s unbreakable skin making him a force to be reckoned with.

Following his own series, Cage will return in The Defenders, a team-up series which will see Cage, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones join up with Iron Fist.

All episodes of Luke Cage will arrive on Netflix on September 30.
