Love Island bosses 'to crack down on smoking' after complaints last series

Love Island bosses will reportedly crack down on smoking after it was cigarettes, not saucy scenes, that prompted a slew of complaints last year.

Islanders’ smoking habits lit up Ofcom’s switchboard as viewers were turned off by the bad habit, with almost all of the 2017 cast smoking, meaning it was featured in most episodes.

According to new reports, this year’s series will take a very different approach to smoking to protect against complaints, with smoking only taking place in a designated smoking shelter – alone, so no more smoke-fuelled gossip fests.

A source told The Sun: “Last year there were more viewer complaints about the amount of smoking than anything else.

“It did feel like someone had a fag in their hand constantly last series, so hopefully viewers will notice the difference.

“It will still be filmed, but as they’ll be alone, there won’t be as many gossipy moments as last year.”

When contacted, ITV said: "There will be no smoking within the Love Island villa or the main villa garden this year."

While an air date is yet to be confirmed, excitement for the fourth series of the revamped show is building.

The hit show – hosted by Caroline Flack - surprised many with its prestigious gong, beating Celebrity Hunted, Old People’s Home for 4 year olds and The Real Full Monty.

Love Island will return to ITV2 soon.
