Ofcom has received complaints from furious Love Island fans claiming Laura Anderson and Paul Knops were not worthy of finishing in second place.

The duo, who only coupled up in the last two weeks of the series, beat established couples Josh Denzel and Kaz Crossley and Megan Barton Hanson and Wes Nelson. Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham were crowned champions.

The broadcasting regulator confirmed four complaints were made by angry fans who took aim at the pair not officially being boyfriend and girlfriend.

A spokesperson said: “We will assess these complaints before deciding whether or not to investigate.”

Fans were left fuming at the news with many questioning if their placing was a “joke”.

One viewer tweeted: “Nah. Laura & Paul have beaten Meg & Wes? Are you s******* me? “I just see nothing about Laura & Paul, they’re bloody boring #LoveIsland.”

Another posted: “Naa who is voting for Laura & Paul, is everything alright at home? #LoveIsland.”

A third refused to believe the public would vote for the couple, tweeting: “Nah fam Love Island is rigged, no way in hell did Laura and Paul get more votes than Megan and Wes, what a load of utter s****!”

Anderson and Knops failed to come close to challenging Dyer and Fincham for the win, with the lovebirds storming to victory with 79.66 per cent of the vote.

Anderson and Knops edged into second with 8.44 per cent behind Crossley and Denzel with 605 per cent and Barton Hanson and Nelson with 5.88 per cent.

The series became the most watched on a digital channel ever among 16-34 year olds, but also attracted 2,600 complaints to Ofcom over footage of Fincham meeting his ex Ellie Jones in Casa Amor being shown to Dyer.
