Lady Gaga has revealed that she tried to sneak make-up in while filming A Star Is Born – but director Bradley Cooper wasn’t having it.

Cooper, who also appears in his directorial debut, requested that lead star Gaga stripped back her appearance for the role of unknown singer Ally, including having her dye her hair back to its natural colour.

But Gaga also had to give up using any products on her face during filming, something she admitted during a chat with The Graham Norton Show wasn’t always easy.

The actress said: “I tried to sneak some make-up in, but Bradley wouldn't go for it…”

Cooper, sat beside her, interjected: “It's how the character is and Lady Gaga is incredible."

The pair have become firm friends through the project, with Gaga gushing over Cooper’s singing talent and landing the role in the film.

She said: “Once I heard Bradley sing I was blown away by him, I was moved by his passion.

“He may have had to convince other people to have me in the movie but, he didn't have to convince me.”

Elsewhere on Friday night’s show, First Man star Ryan Gosling opened up about feeling the pressure of reciting Neil Armstrong’s iconic line in the film.

Gosling said: “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind'. I was worried about it.

“It hung over me as it is the most famous life and a beautiful thing to say. Neil didn't think about it ahead of time so I tried not to think about it too much.”

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker also joined Norton on the sofa to chat about the sci-fi Time Lord and Rod Stewart performed before stopping for a chat.

The Graham Norton Show airs Friday 28 September at 10.35pm on BBC One.
