John Cleese has spoken of his decision to quit the UK, saying he will only consider returning on one condition.

The comedy legend, 78, has just over a month left before he jets off to the Caribbean island of Nevis where he will stay until “we get proportional representation”.

“I’m going to buzz off in November because I’m fed up with the corruption in this country, and in particular with just how awful the newspapers are,” he told Good Morning Britain.

“I’m going to go to Nevis because I can’t get through the British winter anymore. Once you get to about 50 you don’t have the energy to drag yourself through another English winter.

“I’m going basically to the sun, I’m also going to be closer to America where most of my work is at the moment.”

Despite being closer to the US, the Monty Python star said he has no plans to visit as it is “stark staring mad” under Donald Trump.

Asked if anything could tempt him back to the UK he said: “When we get proportional representation and when we get Leveson to implement it, then I shall be delighted to come back. Then we can actually do something, because this country is in a terrible mess at the moment.”

Cleese revealed plans to move in July, saying he is “so disappointed” with the “awful” standard of debate during and since the EU referendum.

He told BBC Two’s Newsnight: “I’m leaving in November.

“I actually am leaving. I’m making arrangements now.”

Cleese is relocating with his wife Jennifer who is a fan of the Caribbean island.

The Fawlty Towers star put his Grade II-listed house near Bath on the market for £2.7 million and reportedly engaged estate agents Dexters to sell his one bedroom flat off of Sloane Square.
