The Homes Under the Hammer presenter crashed out of the competition alongside Wayne Bridge in a double eviction.

Speaking to Ant and Dec after leaving camp, Roberts spoke positively of his experience.

“Holy mackerel,” he said. “My oh my oh my, I had no idea it would be anything like that. The people, the experience, how it affects you in ways you would never imagine.”

The late arrival had trouble in his first few days of the show, taking a while to adjust to eating rice and beans and the dynamic of the group.

“I’d seen the group and how close they’d become, so it was always going to be a difficult thing to break into,” he said. “It got quite tough quite quickly.”

Roberts attributed his divisive behaviour to “wanting to be loved and liked by people”, and spoke about “being bullied really badly at school”.

He revealed he was always “the last person to be picked” in sports – but said he learned a lot from his jungle experience.

“One of the things the jungle has taught me is, I’m ok,” he said. “If you just chill out a bit, people come to a reasonable decision about you.

“The camaraderie [in camp], people said some truly lovely things. I’ll take that with me for the rest of my life.”

“Not everyone in the world is going to like you.”

One campmate who seemed to take against Roberts was Larry Lamb.

“I never had a problem with Larry, but I think Larry had a bit of a problem with me,” Roberts admitted.

“He was the patriarch of the group. He’d taken them under his wing and thought I was a bit of a threat, which I was never ever going to be.

“I never deliberately rubbed him up the wrong way.

“I pretty much kept quiet and gave him a wide berth.”
