Harry Redknapp looked close to being sick as he took part in one of the most testing trials ever concocted on I’m A Celebrity.

The former football manager joined Emperor Noel Edmonds for Nero to Zero which saw them tasked with holding live jungle critters in their mouths for 60 seconds in a bid to win stars.

Declan Donnelly said: “Well Emperor Noel and Personal Advisor Harry, as you know your reign is coming to an end and the tables have been turned. Tonight all the celebrities will be eligible to eat the food you win in the Bush Tucker Trial.”

Explaining the trial co-host Holly Willoughby said: “This Trial is called Nero To Zero. To win stars one to seven you need to hold different live critters in your mouth for 60 seconds and we’re going to tell you how to win the final four stars when we get to that part of the Trial. There are a total of 11 stars to be won. Each star wins a mean for camp.”

The trial kicked off with Edmonds holding a stick insect in his mouth. He won a star before Redknapp was faced with six beach worms. He placed them in his mouth, but didn’t put his thumb up. Edmonds shouted: “That was ten seconds for a start.”

Redknapp gagged as he struggled to hold out for the 60 seconds. On completing the task he said: “I felt sure I was going to swallow one. One was really deep down my throat.”

Edmonds manged to win a star for holding a yabbie before Redknapp successfully held six witchety grubs in his mouth.

He was later left groaning in agony after a ranger presented him with a burrowing cockroach. Redknapp squirmed as the insect wriggled around inside, but he successfully managed to complete the task and bag a meal for camp.

“He dug his paws into my lips like you wouldn’t believe,” Redknapp said. “His paws, his claws, his antlers, I don’t know what he’s got.”

The duo bagged seven stars before heading to a Roman banquet where they were tasked with eating sheep brains and popping fish eyes. They lapped up the unappetising feast to the disgust of their housemates to win four more stars.

I’m A Celebrity is on ITV, tomorrow at 9pm
