The brand new version of the Great British Bake Off kicked off with show-stopping bakes, brand new faces and a healthy smattering of the innuendos that fans know and love.

Viewers were just as focused on new judge Prue Leith and presenters Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig as they were on this year's batch of wannabe bakers, with Channel 4's changes well and truly under the spotlight.

The first episode of the new-look baking show, which has hopped over from BBC One, proved a firm hit with the majority of viewers when it aired on Tuesday night.

Fans on Twitter praised Leith's "easy-going" demeanour and Fielding "charming" presenting technique, while the programme format appeared to be largely unchanged.

The Great British Bake Off 2017 - The Contestants

Peter, 52, from Essex was sadly the first person to lose their place in the competition on Tuesday, after a series of errors during his three bakes.

Marketing manager Steven was crowned the first Star Baker, thanks to his amazing cake shaped like a loaf of bread and a sandwhich.

Episode one kicked off with a “fruity” signature challenge, followed by the traditional technical challenge, which was a classic chocolate mini roll.

The showstopper was the “trickiest” yet for a first episode, with contestants told to make an "illusion" cake, which didn't look like a cake at all.
