With social media users expressing their frustration with Theresa May’s election campaign via the medium of gifs on Monday, it’s clear that when it comes to sharing your political views, unusual times call for unusual measures.

And it doesn’t get much quirkier than Turner Prize winning artist Grayson Perry’s new Brexit-themed artwork and TV show.

A new documentary for Channel 4 sees Perry chat to ordinary people about their thoughts on the current climate and present his experiences through pottery.

After setting out to use one of the biggest political shifts of our time to inspire his work, the artist invited the public to send in their Brexit-based suggestions, ideas and images to help inform his work.

With the voting population split almost exactly down the middle, Perry concerns himself with investigating the gap between Leavers and Remainers, visiting the staunchest pro-Brexit and pro-EU areas of the UK.

The journey led the artist to create two pots entitled Matching Pair, one for those who voted in and one for those who voted out. The works will go on display as part of his new show at the Serpentine Gallery - The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!

Despite seemingly stark differences between the two camps, Perry explains that as the name suggests, the pots are “remarkably similar”.

“I thought it would be an interesting experiment to make a work that involved, to use the fashionable term, crowdsourcing via social media”, he said

“The two pots have come out looking remarkably similar, which is a good result, for we all have much more in common than that which separates us.”

Grayson Perry: Divided Britain will air on Channel at 9pm.
