Game of Thrones: The Last Watch: Kit Harington sheds a tear in new trailer for behind-the-scenes documentary

The behind-the-scenes documentary looks set to be an emotional rollercoaster

Kit Harington gets emotional in the new trailer for The Last Watch, the feature length documentary that promises to give Game of Thrones fans unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the hit show.

The teaser clip, which landed online yesterday, features footage from the ensemble cast’s final table read, as Harington and his colleagues Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams discover their characters’ fates.

“This is strange. Here we are at the last table reading – it’s like looking around and seeing your family,” show boss D.B. Weiss tells the assembled stars, as Harington tries to hold back the tears.

The trailer goes on to give fans a sneak peek at how the fantasy show is put together, from scenes filmed in front of a green screen to gruelling night shoots.

“Every episode has as much in it as one feature film,” a member of the production team explains in a voiceover.

Announcing the film earlier this year, HBO promised that The Last Watch would be “much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, describing it as “funny” and “heart-breaking.”

“Game of Thrones: The Last Watch delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car parks of Northern Ireland,” the channel’s original statement read.

“Made with unprecedented access, Game of Thrones: The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they content with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.

“Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heart-breaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.”

The two-hour long special was directed by British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, who was granted “unprecedented access” to the show’s set during the filming of season eight.

It is set to air in the US on May 26, one week after the show bows out with the series eight’s sixth episode on May 18. The finale will be simultaneously broadcast in the UK at 2am on Sky Atlantic and will be repeated at 9pm.
