Emilia Clarke has backed her character Daenerys Targaryen’s lack of concern after finding out she is related to boyfriend Jon Snow on Game of Thrones.

During Sunday’s episode Clarke’s fierce counterpart found out that she had been in an incestuous relationship with her nephew, played by Kit Harington.

The dramatic scene saw Daenerys barely bat an eyelid at the fact that she had been romancing with a relative and more concerned that she may not be first in line to the Iron Throne.

Defending her characters nonchalant attitude to the relationship, she told Entertainment Weekly: “The related thing, to her, is so normal. She could have easily married her brother [Viserys]. It’s not a thing. It’s a thing for Jon, but let’s just forget about that!

“The main thing is we’re up for the same promotion and I’ve been working for it for my entire existence.”

Clarke added that for Daenerys ruling Westeros is her “whole existence” and that remains her focus.

She said: “Since birth! Dany literally was brought into this world going, ‘RUN!’ These f****** [in Westeros] have f***** everything up. Now it’s, ‘You’re our only hope.’ There’s so much she’s taken on in her duty in life to rectify.

“There’s so much she’s seen and witnessed and been through and lost and suffered and hurt to get her and Jon doesn’t even want it!”

Clarke’s comments come after she mocked the pair’s relationship by sharing a “family portrait” alongside Harington.

Show staple Harington previously told how kissing Clarke felt “really odd” after the pair had become “best friends” over the course of the show.

In a hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the first episode HBO showed a clip of the star pretending to gag after the pair shared a passionate kiss.

Game of Thrones airs on Mondays on Sky Atlantic at 2am and 9pm and is available to stream on NOW TV.
