Game of Thrones bowed out with one of its most explosive seasons ever with The Winds of Winter.

With the end of the story looming, the quest for the Iron Throne – and for survival in the face of the wights – is making Westeros an even more treacherous place to be than usual.

One person who learned that the hard way was Margaery Tyrell, who met a fiery end thanks to Cersei’s revenge plot against the High Sparrow.

Using a stash of wildfire hidden under the city, Cersei blew up the Sept and everyone inside – including Margaery, her brother Loras, and the High Sparrow himself.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Natalie Dormer spoke about Margaery’s death, and blamed the High Sparrow for making her lose control.

“The reason it all goes tits up is because Margaery wasn’t in control of the battle against Cersei,” she explained.

“She had to hand the reins over to the High Sparrow and Cersei outplays him. By the end, Margaery is a victim of the High Sparrow’s incompetence.

“He underestimates Cersei and that’s something Margaery Tyrell would never do.”

The actress, who has appeared in the show since Season 2, labelled her death scene as “an inspired choice” by the show creators.

“It’s not an echo of anything you’ve seen in the last six years,” she said. “It’s truly its own unique moment to tie up what’s been a unique storyline about what’s happened in King’s Landing over the course of season 6.”
